102.   Girls’ Run Club with Ms. Gerron and Ms. Nolan, Grades 3-5

Mrs. Gerron and Ms. Nolan are inviting all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls to join them in expanding their love for running while increasing their endurance and speed. We will be teaching and practicing: warm-up stretches, short sprints, long jogs/runs, aerobic cross training, and cool-down stretching.

103.   Monday Clay Studio with Ms. Westergren & Ms. Lewis, Grades K-5

Clay seems to have a mysterious attraction to almost everyone. It can be pinched, poked, rolled, squeezed etc. into limitless amazing creations. We will spend time in Clay Studio going over basic techniques for working with clay: pinching, coil building, slab building etc., and taking “next steps” in our surface decoration and intermediate building techniques. This is a unique studio experience blending students of a variety of ages and skill levels.  Offered on Mondays and Wednesdays.

104.   Harry Potter & The Book Club with Mrs. Kuchera (Frantz), Grades 4-5

Are you a Harry Potter fan and have read the book series over and over again? Or are you new to the Harry Potter series? Well either way, this book club is for you! During this session we will be reading the third book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. We will be taking a deeper look into the book where we will be able to make connections to other books in the series. We will also take time during the last two sessions to watch the movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (rated PG). While watching the movie, we will make book-to-film comparisons. The price includes the book, which students get to keep.

105.   FIT 4 KIDZ: ALL SPORTZ!, Grades K-2

This Winter your child will be learning a variety of sports including: lacrosse, floor hockey, frisbee golf, track and field, soccer, Putt Putt Golf and volleyball. At the end of the 8-week session, your child will have a basic understanding of the sport and its equipment.  The program is designed to encourage movement and energy release in a fun, active & non-competitive way.  The program is broken down into 4 units, each unit focusing on one of the key fitness fundamentals: Teamwork & Friendship, Flexibility & Balance, Speed & Endurance, and Proper Nutrition.  Coached by Olympic hopeful (800m) Quamel Prince from the District Track Club. Come learn how to make yummy hot cocoa and how to earn money selling it! A hot cocoa stand is a great way to introduce our youngest entrepreneurs to the world of business and is fun!  This program empowers kids with an entrepreneurial mindset for their “business,” drawing from such disciplines as marketing, finance and strategy, in a supportive environment fostering teamwork. From designing marketing flyers to estimating profits to experimenting with recipes, students have fun while developing business savvy!

Students will become outdoor explorers when they take on the role of junior naturalist and explore the urban ecosystem in and around the Glebe campus. Students will learn about different groups of plants and animals and what happens to them through the seasons. Bring your outdoor clothing and curiosity about the natural world!

201.   A Trip Around the World (Part 2) with Ms. Sebastian, Grades K-2

ALL NEW COUNTRIES!  Pack your bags again for another great itinerary including all new places.  We will visit Iceland, South Africa, Thailand, India, Ireland, Brazil, The Czech Republic and New Zealand. 202.   Polar Bear Club (Smart Moves) with Mr. Herninko, Grades 1-3

(Attention: this is an OUTDOOR class in winter time. Students will be required to come dressed for 45 minutes in cold temps. More details below)

Get ready for an awesome time as Mr. Herninko rolls out some fun team and cooperative games for outdoor winter-play. Capture the Flag, Snow Soccer, Frozen Football, and Icicle Parachute are just some of the possibilities (even some sledding might happen). So come out, bundled up and get ready to play with Smart Moves, outside, this January.

Students are required to have the following to participate in Smart Moves Polar Bear Club: Winter coat, ski/winter hat, gloves, boots (if there is snow), and ski pants/change of pants (if there’s snow). If any of these are missing, they will not be allowed to attend the class (for safety and health reasons). I also highly suggest long-johns or tights under their pants for an extra layer of protection against the cold.  We will typically go outside if the temp/wind chill is 30 degrees or above (if it’s 28 and sunny with little wind, we will probably go out). We will do indoor activities in the case of inclement weather.  This class is not for students with have asthma or another medical condition that is exacerbated by cold weather.

Tennis Players!  Come join us to learn a sport that is both fun and healthy! This program introduces your child to tennis and helps develop: hand-eye coordination, agility, balance, movement, racquet skills, and sportsmanship. We develop the fundamental strokes: forehand, backhand, volleys, and serves using drills and games in a fun, safe, and friendly environment. 207.   Intermediate/Advanced Karate, Green Belt or higher, Grades 2-5

Students in this 90 minute class will learn intermediate techniques, mid-level sparring concepts and the kata. The class will focus on conditioning, footwork and drills that will help them prepare for the next belt level. Students must have all of the required equipment (green belt or higher, wear a full uniform with belt, have sparring gear, have a karate journal) before the first day of class. If students do not meet the above requirements, they must have permission from the coach to join the class.  This class will be 90 minutes in length and students must be a green belt or higher.

Bring your BIG GREEN ideas and watch them GROW! Participants will build their own Recycling Robots made from recyclable goods!  The Recycling Robots will STAR as the main characters in your own play, commercial, musical, or graphic novel. The focus is on keeping the Earth GREEN!

401.   Beginning Karate, New students to Yellow Belts, Grades K-5

This popular class is a disciplined introduction to the sport.  Your child will learn the beautiful art of karate while gaining safety & defensive skills in a respectful environment.  Students will focus on basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks. The class will also emphasize the basic karate principles of focus, patience, self-discipline, and partner work. Returning students will continue to work toward new belts while first time students will be able to start the belt program. New students should wear comfortable clothes to class and can invest in a Kaizen Karate t-shirt to earn their white belts. Each week students will push the limits on the snack concept and prepare a variety of wholesome, delicious, and unique nibbles. This is not your mother’s PB&J! Chefs will prepare a variety of bite-sized munchies like chicken salad cups, homemade granola bars, veggie nachos, roasted red pepper hummus with homemade pita chips, and more. 403.   Piano Keys 4 Kids, Grades 1-5

This group piano class studies hands-on piano and music theory.  Your child will work closely with the teacher to follow a carefully planned sequence that guarantees fun and success in a playful group atmosphere. The instructor will teach how to count rhythm, identify notes, and play common melodies on the white and black keys of the piano.  For returning and advanced students, Book 2 and 3 will be offered.  Students will be introduced to notes on the staff in C, Middle C and G position.  Note: Tuition includes a workbook. Roll-up keyboards are provided for class instruction, but they can also be purchased for an additional $30 for the student to take home.

404.   Ballet/Jazz/Hip-Hop Combination Class, Grades 1-4

Our Most Popular Class in Elementary & Middle Schools! 5-6-7-8 Dance presents this dance combination class of three exciting styles including Jazz, Ballet and Hip-Hop! This is a great class for students who want to try different styles of dance. The ballet portion focuses on the basic ballet positions, terminology and movement. Students will learn a variety of ballet movements including balance, jumping, stretches and basic turns. The jazz portion of the class is fun way to learn about proper jazz dance technique, body awareness and muscle control while moving along to a variety of different music genres. In the hip-hop portion of the class students will learn choreographed and freestyle hip-hop dance movement giving them a chance to express their own style set to upbeat pop and hip-hop style music. Our version of hip-hop dance uses tasteful dance movement and age appropriate music. Set in a creative and encouraging environment, our class focuses on a proper warm-up, stretching, muscle control and dance terminology. Dance attire is totally optional. Classes are designed to accommodate a “come-as-you-are” group, though loose-fitting or athletic attire is best. Each 5-6-7-8 Dance session ends with a presentation to family and friends giving students a chance to present the different things they have learned during the session. All students will receive a Certificate of Participation.

405.   Filmmaking, Grades 3-5

Students learn to plan, write, shoot, edit, and complete post-production on a digital video short film. Students learn about the basics of film, shot composition, scripting, storyboarding, and the pre-production phase of filmmaking.  Students then move on to act out scripts and shoot the film using boom mics, and professional Panasonic DVX- 100 digital video cameras. Students edit their film using iMovie, add music and credits, complete post-production, and export the film to a private  Vimeo account for home viewing.

 406.   Jr. Robotics – Land Vehicles and Creatures, Grades K-2

Students work with a partner and complete an all-new set of building and programming projects. Each week, class begins with a group discussion of the critical components of the robot or mechanical model and then shown an animated video that brings the robot to life. After constructing the bot with LEGO® pieces, they connect it to a laptop computer and program it with easy-to-use touch-and-drag software. After programming the robots, students use the remaining 10-20 minutes of class to play and share with parents. Weekly projects include building and programming a small helicopter, jumping rabbit, Batman’s tumbler,  Space Shuttle, race car and more.  Time permitting, each class concludes with a group discussion of what was learned. LEGO® kits, touchscreen computers, software and all other supplies and materials will be provided.  Class is 75 minutes in length.

502.   Advanced Chess Wizards, Grades K-5

Chess Wizards is a premier chess education company providing fun, informative and challenging chess lessons to students. Chess Wizards teaches children many important life concepts, such as learning the ability to win graciously and accept defeat with dignity and sportsmanship. Students will be divided into groups according to their chess experience. At the end of this session, each student will have had the chance to participate in a mini-chess tournament.

503/504.     Fencing I & II, Grades K-5

This fencing class will teach basic footwork and mobility appropriate to the sport of fencing, as well as basic handwork skills. The equipment used will be foam sabers and foils with a focus on elementary actions. Games are used to teach the basics of fencing and the kids will get a good workout while having a great time.

505.   EV3 Robotics, Grades 3-5

This club focuses on LEGO’s EV3 robotics platform. Students design, construct, and program their robots to perform in sensor-based challenges, as well as robotic competitions. Initial student projects include hill climbing, beacon retrieval, color sensor navigation, and robot combat. Advanced programming and more complex robotics tasks are available for students ready for additional challenges. Students with any level of robotics experience are welcome to join.

506.   Silly Storytellers, Grades K-2

We need your silliness!  Whether your child’s a real ham or a standup guy, they will love this class. Gain the tools to be a master teller of hilarious tales-they will stretch their imaginations, tell a story, convey a thought, and do it all to make the audience crack up! By using the actor tools of body, voice, and imagination, these comedians will take us on a journey to entertain and inspire their audience through the beginning, middle, and end. Students will work together to create original comic stories that they will perform on the stage.  Family and friends are invited for a final sharing on the last day of class.

Kids will learn to safely use a hammer and nails to construct their own toys, games and other creations in this 75 minute class. A project will be completed during each class. Every attempt will be made to provide new projects so that children who took the class last time will not be repeating the same

projects. The finished works are substantial, usable and able to be finished during class time. Both boys and girls have enjoyed this class. Past session projects have included: a tank, car shooter, small pool game, wooden box with hinged lid, picture frame and soft ball catapult.
