102. Harry Potter & The Book Club with Mrs. Kuchera (Frantz), Grades 4-5

Are you a Harry Potter fan and have read the book series over and over again? Or are you new to the Harry Potter series? Well either way, this book club is for you! During this session we will be reading the second book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We will be taking a deeper look into the book where we will be able to make connections to other books in the series. We will also take time during the last two sessions to watch the movie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (rated PG). While watching the movie, we will make book-to-film comparisons. The price includes the book, which students get to keep.

105. Monday Clay Studio with Ms. Westergren & Ms. Lewis, Grades K-5

Clay seems to have a mysterious attraction to almost everyone. It can be pinched, poked, rolled, squeezed etc. into limitless amazing creations. We will spend time in Clay Studio going over basic techniques for working with clay: pinching, coil building, slab building etc., and taking “next steps” in our surface decoration and intermediate building techniques. This is a unique studio experience blending students of a variety of ages and skill levels.  Now offered on Mondays and Wednesdays.

106. Feathered Friends: Investigating Migratory Birds, Grades 3-5

Did you ever wonder where some birds go in the fall and winter months? Come join us to find out and be part of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center’s Bridging the Americas Program!  We will learn about the migratory birds who spend the fall and winter in Nicaragua and return to Virginia in the spring and summer to breed and nest. We will partner with children on Ometepe Island, situated in Lake Nicaragua, and we will exchange information about “our” birds, each other, and the natural world that is around us!

Learn and practice cursive letters a – z. The Cursive 101 class will help students learn all of the lower case letters. Students might be able to read and write in cursive by the end of the class.

206. Intermediate/Advanced Karate, Green Belt or higher, Grades 2-5

Students in this 90 minute class will learn intermediate techniques, mid-level sparring concepts and the kata. The class will focus on conditioning, footwork and drills that will help them prepare for the next belt level. Students must have all of the required equipment (green belt or higher, wear a full uniform with belt, have sparring gear, have a karate journal) before the first day of class. If students do not meet the above requirements, they must have permission from the coach to join the class. This class will be 90 minutes in length and students must be a green belt or higher

This running club is for grades K-3 and will help students develop a love for running and healthy living through group exercises and interactive running activities. Led by Ms. Halligan, all grades are invited to Cheer for Glebe. (Boys too!) Students will learn several cheers and chants to incorporate into a routine, as well as cheer safety and the basics of stunting. At the end of the session, they will perform as a team to showcase their talent. They will also participate in school spirit-building activities. Bring your BIG GREEN ideas and watch them GROW! Star in your own GREEN commercial! Create your own GREEN graphic novel! Produce your own GREEN puppet play! Write a GREEN musical! Or come up with your own cool GREEN ideas!Participants will build their own Recycling Robots made from recyclable materials! Students will write their own scripts starring their Recycling Robots. 401. BOYS GOTTA RUN! ® , Grades 3-5

Can you see your son benefiting from physical activity before his school day? There is a powerful and scientific impact that exercise has on the brain. Over the course of 8 weeks he will embark on a quest to complete a 5K. A run evaluation will be performed by the coaches in addition to injury preventing stretches and conditioning drills in strength, agility, balance and flexibility. There will be a 5K run on the morning of the final class. Parental involvement is encouraged! No refunds offered after the first week of instruction.

This popular class is a disciplined introduction to the sport.  Your child will learn the beautiful art of karate while gaining safety & defensive skills in a respectful environment.  Students will focus on basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks. The class will also emphasize the basic karate principles of focus, patience, self-discipline, and partner work. Returning students will continue to work toward new belts while first time students will be able to start the belt program. 403. Piano Keys 4 Kids, Grades 1-5

This group piano class studies hands-on piano and music theory.  Your child will work closely with the teacher to follow a carefully planned sequence that guarantees fun and success in a playful group atmosphere. The instructor will teach how to count rhythm, identify notes, and play common melodies on the white and black keys of the piano.  For returning and advanced students, Book 2 and 3 will be offered. Students will be introduced to notes on the staff in C, Middle C and G position.  Note: Tuition includes a workbook. Roll-up keyboards are provided for class instruction, but they can also be purchased for an additional $30 for the student to take home.

404. Hip Hop Pop Star Dance, Grades 2-4

5-6-7-8 Dance presents this fun, exciting, high-energy Hip-Hop/Pop Dance class set in a creative environment where students will learn choreographed and freestyle hip-hop dance movements. They will be encouraged to express their own style and creative ideas throughout the program. Our version of hip-hop dance class uses tasteful dance movement and age appropriate music. Our class focuses on a proper warm-up, stretching, muscle control and dance terminology. Dance attire is totally optional. Classes are designed to accommodate a “come-as-you-are” group, though loose-fitting or athletic attire is best. Each 5-6-7-8 Dance session ends with a presentation to family and friends giving students a chance to present the different things they have learned during the session.

ALL SPORTZ! This fall, your child will be learning a variety of sports including: lacrosse, floor hockey, track and field, soccer, basketball and volleyball.  At the end of the 8 week session, your child will have a basic understanding of the sport and its equipment. 406. Thursday Intro to Robotics, Grades K-2

Students work with a partner and complete a variety of building and programming projects that aid their understanding of how computer hardware and software work together to bring a robot to life. Each week, class begins with a group discussion of the significant elements of the robot or mechanical model. Students are shown an animated video that illustrates the functionality and behavior of the finished robot. After constructing the bot with LEGO® pieces, they connect it to a touchscreen computer and program it with easy-to-use touch-and-drag software. After programming the robots, students use the remaining class time to play, share with parents and clean up. Time permitting, each class concludes with a group discussion of what was learned. LEGO® kits, touchscreen computers, software and all other supplies and materials will be provided.

Chess Wizards is a premier chess education company providing fun, informative and challenging chess lessons to students. This fencing class will teach basic footwork and mobility appropriate to the sport of fencing, as well as basic handwork skills. The equipment used will be foam sabers and foils with a focus on elementary actions. Games are used to teach the basics of fencing and the kids will get a good workout while having a great time.

This fencing class introduces and reinforces the basics of footwork, mobility, and handwork in fencing. The equipment used will be foils and flepees (epees with foil blades to make contract safer and softer). Drills and exercises are intermixed with games and other physical activities. The focus is on basic fencing skills, physical exercises, and fun.

506. Woodworking, Grades K-5

This is a 6-week class starting on October 11th, ending on November 22nd.

Kids will learn to safely use a hammer and nails to construct their own toys, games and other creations. A project will be completed during each class. Every attempt will be made to provide new projects so that children who took the class last time will not be repeating the same projects. The finished works are substantial, usable and able to be finished during class time. Both boys and girls have enjoyed this class. Past session projects have included: a tank, car shooter, small pool game, wooden box with hinged lid, picture frame and soft ball catapult.
