Do you love flag football? Then flag football with Mr. Gray and Mr. Fernandez is the class for you. We will be learning rules, positions, and skills, as well as playing games, all while having fun and cooperating with friends in your age group.

102. Playful Pilates with Ms. Savitsky, Grades 2-5

Children love to be active, so Pilates exercises for kids will seem like play to them! We will learn the basic Pilates moves with a kid-friendly twist. We will exercise to popular music and incorporate fun props. After mastering the basic moves, kids will have opportunities to teach the class their favorite moves! Some of the benefits of pilates include better concentration, increased flexibility, better posture, increased self-esteem and confidence, reduced stress and strengthening of the core muscles. Pilates is great for kids involved in sports or dance to improve balance and coordination. All students will receive a special thick ½ inch pilates mat and mini-ball for use in class and to keep at the end of the session! Ms. Savitsky is a certified Mat Instructor through Balanced Body University. Mat and ball included and student will take them home at the end of the class.

103. Hands On Turtle Care, Grades 2-4

Join the Glebe turtles, Oscar and Smirny, for some fun and adventure. As fall arrives, our reptile buddies slow down. They eat less and less as winter approaches. Even so, we observe and learn about the turtles’ unique places in nature. This class offers unplugged time for weather-watching, for moving our bodies on the Glebe landscape, and for studying our turtles’ home habitats: Eastern China and Siberia.

106. Build it/Draw it with Ms. Westergren and Ms. Lewis, Grades K-2

In this unique enrichment class, students will have the opportunity to work three dimensionally, building sculpturally from different materials every week, and two dimensionally, drawing from what they have built, and using these drawings as inspiration for paintings and collages. We will build with our own custom made block set, with cardboard, play dough, and found natural materials.

201. Girls’ Run Club with Ms. Pertl and Ms. Roberts, Grades 4-5

Ms. Roberts and Ms. Pertl are excited to once again offer an after-school running club for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls! As the weather gets warmer, we’ll enjoy the outdoors while exercising together. Each session will include a warm up, a short run at school/through the neighborhoods, a cool down, and a healthy snack. A club T-shirt will also be provided. This club is open to all fitness levels — we’ll keep it fun, social, and motivating!

The American Sign Language (ASL) Club is for students to learn about the deaf culture and how to communicate in American Sign Language. Some of the lessons will include: alphabet, numbers, days of the week, common phrases/sayings, food, animals, and many more! During the club, we will be able to practice using the various signs through games and group activities.

204. Trip Around the World with Ms. Sebastian PART 2, Grades K-2

Pack your bags for a great itinerary! We will visit Iceland, South Africa, Thailand, India, Ireland, Brazil, The Czech Republic and New Zealand. During class the children will get to taste foods, create art projects and play games that originate in these different countries.

205. Fairy Gardens with Ms. Gutowski, Grades K-4

If you are itching to create your own Fairy Garden , this is the enrichment class for you! We’ll create our very own Fairyland, just outside Ms. Gutowski’s classroom. Kids will learn how to create a small fairy house and a variety of accessories; such as fences, ponds, tables and chairs. Each class will focus on building different items and we will add them to our garden throughout the fall. Class includes all the items and instruction needed to make a wonderful Fairy Garden. Children can take home all of their creations at the end of the session! This class is perfect for kindergarten through third grade classes

205. Intermediate/Advanced Karate II – Yellow Belt or higher, Grades 2-5

This popular class is a disciplined introduction to the sport by Kaizen Karate. Your child will learn the beautiful art of karate while gaining safety and defensive skills in a respectful environment. The class will also emphasize the basic karate principles of focus, patience and self-discipline. Additionally, students must have sparring gear to attend this class. Basic sparring concepts will be taught during class time in a safe manner. Returning students will continue to work toward new belts. Parents should view the student handbook on the Kaizen Karate website for specific belt requirements for each level. This class will be 90 minutes in length and students must be a yellow belt or higher. (Instruction provided by Kaizen Karate)

302. Cheerleading, Grades K-5

Led by Ms. Halligan, all grades are invited to Cheer for Glebe. (Boys too!) Students will learn several cheers and chants to incorporate into a routine, as well as cheer safety and the basics of stunting. At the end of the session, they will perform as a team to showcase their talent. They will also participate in school spirit-building activities. Note: New uniforms are $50 or uniform rental ($15) is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This running club is for grades K-3 and will help students develop a love for running and healthy living through group exercises and interactive running activities. During each session, students will engage in running activities, participate in appropriate stretching (warm ups and cool downs) and also gain an understanding of the overall positive health benefits of running.

305. Pop Art Pets with Ms. Westergren & Ms. Lewis, Grades 3-5

Using our favorite pets, real or imagined, as our starting point, we will create work inspired by the art making styles of American Pop Art masters Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claus Oldenburg, to name a few. Using bright, solid colors, lots of pattern, and changing the usual scale of things, watch your animals become modern masterpieces!

402. Piano Keys 4 Kid, Grades 1-5

This group piano class studies hands-on piano and music theory. Your child will work closely with the teacher to follow a carefully planned sequence that guarantees fun and success in a playful group atmosphere. The instructor will teach how to count rhythm, identify notes, and play common melodies on the white and black keys of the piano.
Students who have taken this class previously will advance to Book 2 and begin to learn how to read notes on the staff in C and Middle C position with more advanced songs to play. Offered by Piano Keys 4 Kids (PK4K). Note: Tuition includes a workbook. Roll-up keyboards are provided for class instruction, but they can also be purchased for an additional $30 for the student to take home.

403. My FIrst Lemonade Stand, Grades K-2

Let’s sell lemonade! Join us for this fun class, where you will learn how to make yummy lemonade and how to earn money selling it! Fun sessions empower students with an entrepreneurial mindset for their lemonade stand. Students learn about marketing, finance and strategy in a supporting environment fostering teamwork. From designing marketing flyers to estimating profits to experimenting with recipes, young students will have fun while engaging in enriching activities with a lasting developmental impact. Students donate profits to a charity when they launch their lemonade stand in the spring!

404. Jr. Robotics 102, Grades K-2

Students will work with a partner and perform a variety of hands-on building and programming projects that introduce them to the fundamentals of robotics as well as provide them with opportunities to express their creativity. Each week, students will build a new robot and class will begin with a mini-lesson covering the critical components of the robot or mechanical model. Each class will begins an on-screen animated video that brings the robot to life and shows builders exactly what the finished robot can do. After building it with LEGO® pieces, they connect it to a laptop computer and program it with easy-to-use touch-and-drag software. After programming the robots, students use the remaining 10-20 minutes of class to play and share with classmates. Each class concludes with a group discussion of what was learned. Weekly projects include a set of eight all-new robots including: Windmill, Drag Racer and Helicopter. LEGO® kits, touchscreen computers, software and all other supplies and materials will be provided.

405. Gamemaker Studio, Grades 3-5

Students learn object-oriented programming by designing, creating, and debugging games with GameMaker: Studio (http://www.yoyogames.com). Students create and script worlds, objects, graphics, and sounds.Topics include game asset management, objects, events and actions, variables, collision detection, score, and timers. Concepts are taught through a combination of instruction, discussion, tutorials, and extensions. Students create a game of their own design for a final project.

501. Typing, Grades 3-5

Work smarter by learning how to type! As school work becomes increasingly performed in computers, today’s busy students can save an enormous amount of time by learning to type effectively. Finish your homework in half the time! Typing can be faster than hand-writing, which allows students to articulate thoughts faster, without the limitations of slow handwriting. In this practical class, students learn how to type in progressive steps, using all fingers correctly, for a more fluid expression of ideas, potentially improving their written communication skills in the process. Mini-competitions and activities make it fun for the students to improve their typing skills. Can you spell QWERTY?

502. Beginning Chess Wizards, Grades K-5

Learning chess can be a great activity for kids, with many social, cognitive, and emotional benefits. Chess Wizards’ high energy curriculum makes learning chess a fun and exciting experience. In addition to chess lessons, students will participate in a variety of variation games, team challenges, and other activities designed to make chess a lifelong pastime children can enjoy with their family and friends.

503. Advanced Chess Wizards, Grades K-5

Chess Wizards is a premier chess education company providing fun, informative and challenging chess lessons to students. Chess Wizards teaches children many important life concepts, such as learning the ability to win graciously and accept defeat with dignity and sportsmanship. Students will be divided into groups according to their chess experience. At the end of this session, each student will have had the chance to participate in a mini-chess tournament.

504. Fencing I, Grades K-5

This fencing class will teach basic footwork and mobility appropriate to the sport of fencing, as well as basic handwork skills. The equipment used will be foam sabers and foils with a focus on elementary actions. Games are used to teach the basics of fencing and the kids will get a good workout while having a great time.

505. Fencing II, Grades K-5

This fencing class introduces and reinforces the basics of footwork, mobility, and handwork in fencing. The equipment used will be foils and flepees (epees with foil blades to make contract safer and softer). Drills and exercises are intermixed with games and other physical activities. The focus is on basic fencing skills, physical exercises, and fun.

506. Glee Club, Grades K-5

The Glee Club is a vocal ensemble open to all elementary aged students that enriches interest in music, singing, and dancing. This is a fun atmosphere in which the students are encouraged to be confident in expressing their unique and amazing creativity! Throughout the enrichment session, members of the Glee Club will learn to sing age-appropriate and modern pop and Broadway music. While practicing the music, members will learn about healthy vocal technique, as well as music theory concepts such as rhythm and introductory music reading. They will also learn some easy dance moves to accompany the music. At the end of the session, the Glee Club will perform a concert for friends and family. No audition required and all ages are welcome!

507. Woodworking, Grades K-5

Kids will learn to safely use a hammer and nails to construct their own toys, games and other creations. A project will be completed during each class. Every attempt will be made to provide new projects so that children who took the class last time will not be repeating the same projects. The finished works are substantial, usable and able to be finished during class time. Both boys and girls have enjoyed this class. Past session projects have included: a tank, car shooter, small pool game, wooden box with hinged lid, picture frame and soft ball catapult.
