101.Hands-On Turtle Care, Grades 2-4

Join the Glebe turtles, Oscar and Smirny, for some fun and adventure. As fall arrives, our reptile buddies slow down. They eat less and less as winter approaches. Even so, we observe and learn about the turtles’ unique places in nature. This class offers unplugged time for weather-watching, for moving our bodies on the Glebe landscape, and for studying our turtles’ home habitats: Eastern China and Siberia.

103. American Sign Language with Glebe Librarian, Ms. Frantz, Grades K-5

The American Sign Language (ASL) Club is for students to learn about the deaf culture and how to communicate in American Sign Language. Some of the lessons will include: alphabet, numbers, days of the week, common phrases/sayings, food, animals, and many more! During the club, we will be able to practice using the various signs through games and group activities. All former students are welcome–they receive different lessons/instruction.

105. Monday Clay Studio with Ms. Westergren & Ms. Lewis Grades K-5

Clay seems to have a mysterious attraction to almost everyone. It can be pinched, poked, rolled, squeezed etc. into limitless amazing creations. We will spend time in Monday Clay Studio going over basic techniques for working with clay: pinching, coil building, slab building etc., and taking “next steps” in our surface decoration and intermediate building techniques. This is a unique studio experience blending students of a variety of ages and skill levels. Now offered on Mondays and Wednesdays.

203. Co-Ed Run Club with Ms. Gerron and Ms. Nolan, Grades K-3

This running club is for grades K-3 and will help students develop a love for running and healthy living through group exercises and interactive running activities. During each session, students will engage in running activities, participate in appropriate stretching (warm ups and cool downs) and gain an understanding of the overall positive health benefits of running.

205. Intermediate/Advanced Karate, Green Belt, Grades 2-5

Students in this class will learn intermediate techniques, mid-level sparring concepts and the kata. The class will focus on conditioning, footwork and drills that will help them prepare for the next belt level. Students must have all the required equipment (green belt or higher, wear a full uniform with belt, have sparring gear, have a karate journal) before the first day of class. If students do not meet the above requirements, they must have permission from the coach to join the class. This class will be 90 minutes in length.

302. Food, Fitness and Fun with Ms. Rutzen, Grades K-2

This club is for grades K-2 and will help students develop an appreciation for exercise and gain an understanding of the positive benefits of healthy snack and fitness choices. Each week we will make a healthy snack, perform stretching/warm ups and participate in activities such as running, yoga, HIIT exercises and more before doing a cool down at the end of the session.

303. Holiday Gift Making with Ms. Hall and Ms. West, Grades K-5

Are you crafty? Do you enjoy making gifts and being creative? This is the activity for you! Join us in making a variety of holiday gifts for your family and friends. Each week we will be making a different themed craft. By the end of the program you will have a collection of handmade gifts that will be wrapped and ready to give out just in time for the holiday season.

304. Cheerleading, Grades K-5

Led by Ms. Halligan, all grades are invited to Cheer for Glebe. (Boys too!) Students will learn several cheers and chants to incorporate into a routine, as well as cheer safety and the basics of stunting. At the end of the session, they will perform as a team to showcase their talent. They will also participate in school spirit-building activities. Note: New uniforms are $50 or uniform rental ($15) is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

305. (WED) Roman’s Robots: Intro to Robotics, Grades K-2

Students work with a partner and complete a variety of building and programming projects that aid their understanding of how computer hardware and software work together to bring a robot to life. Each week, class begins with a group discussion of the significant elements of the robot or mechanical model. Students are shown an animated video that illustrates the functionality and behavior of the finished robot. After constructing the bot with LEGO® pieces, they connect it to a touchscreen computer and program it with easy-to-use touch-and-drag software. After programming the robots, students use the remaining class time to play, share with parents and clean up. Time permitting, each class concludes with a group discussion of what was learned. LEGO® kits, touchscreen computers, software and all other supplies and materials will be provided. Now offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

401. Beginning Karate, New Students to Yellow Belts, Grades K-5

This popular class is a disciplined introduction to the sport. Your child will learn the beautiful art of karate while gaining safety & defensive skills in a respectful environment. Students will focus on basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks. The class will also emphasize the basic karate principles of focus, patience, self-discipline, and partner work. Returning students will continue to work toward new belts while first time students will be able to start the belt program. New students should wear comfortable clothes to class and can invest in a Kaizen Karate t-shirt to earn their white belts. 402. Piano Keys 4 Kid, Grades 1-5

This group piano class studies hands-on piano and music theory. Your child will work closely with the teacher to follow a carefully planned sequence that guarantees fun and success in a playful group atmosphere. The instructor will teach how to count rhythm, identify notes, and play common melodies on the white and black keys of the piano.
For returning and advanced students, Book 2 and 3 will be offered. Students will be introduced to notes on the staff in C, Middle C and G position.
Note: Tuition includes a workbook. Roll-up keyboards are provided for class instruction, but they can also be purchased for an additional $30 for the student to take home.

403. Yoga and Arts and Crafts with Ms. Gulati & Ms. Smith, Grades K-1

Stretch your body and your mind with 30 minutes of yoga followed by 30 minutes of Art led by our wonderful Kindergarten Assistants. Children should bring a mat or towel for yoga, and an old, long shirt that can get dirty for art.

404. Girls’ Run Club with Ms. Updike (aka Ms. Roberts), Grades 4-5

Ms. Updike is excited to once again offer an after-school running club for 4th and 5th grade girls! We’ll enjoy the outdoors while exercising together. Each session will include a warm up, a short run at school/through the neighborhoods, a cool down, and a healthy snack. A club T-shirt will also be provided. This club is open to all fitness levels – we’ll keep it fun, social, and motivating!

501. Beginning Chess Wizards, Grades K-5

Learning chess can be a great activity for kids, with many social, cognitive, and emotional benefits. Chess Wizards’ high energy curriculum makes learning chess a fun and exciting experience. 502. Advanced Chess Wizards, Grades K-5

Chess Wizards is a premier chess education company providing fun, informative and challenging chess lessons to students. Chess Wizards teaches children many important life concepts, such as learning the ability to win graciously and accept defeat with dignity and sportsmanship. Students will be divided into groups according to their chess experience. At the end of this session, each student will have had the chance to participate in a mini-chess tournament.

503. Fencing I, Grades K-5

Have fun learning the art of Olympic fencing! This fencing class will teach basic footwork and mobility appropriate to the sport of fencing, as well as basic handwork skills. The equipment used will be foam sabers and foils with a focus on elementary actions. Games are used to teach the basics of fencing and the kids will get a good workout while having a great time.

504. Fencing II, Grades K-5

This fencing class introduces and reinforces the basics of footwork, mobility, and handwork in fencing. The equipment used will be foils and flepees (epees with foil blades to make contract safer and softer). Drills and exercises are intermixed with games and other physical activities. The focus is on basic fencing skills, physical exercises, and fun.

505. Cooking in La Cocina, Grades 3-5

This is a 6-week class ending on November 16th. Come join us in La Cocina (the kitchen)! This semester, students will learn their recipes in both English and Spanish! Students will be cooking up iconic Spanish foods from 5 different Spanish speaking countries! Pupusas from El Salvador and Cinnamon Apple Enchiladas from Mexico are just a couple of the delicious meals we will be cooking up! Students will also learn how to prepare an effective grocery list both by hand and using apps designed just for recipes.

506. Filmmaking, Grades 3-5

Students will learn to plan, write, shoot, edit, and complete post-production on a digital video short film. Students learn about the basics of film, shot composition, scripting, storyboarding, and the pre-production phase of filmmaking. Students then move on to act out scripts and shoot the film using boom mics, and professional Panasonic DVX- 100 digital video cameras. Using Final Cut Express, students can edit their raw footage to complete the post-production phase. Students can access their video through our private vimeo account after the completion of class.

507. Woodworking, Grades K-5

This is a 6-week class ending on November 16th. Kids will learn to safely use a hammer and nails to construct their own toys, games and other creations. A project will be completed during each class. Every attempt will be made to provide new projects so that children who took the class last time will not be repeating the same projects. The finished works are substantial, usable and able to be finished during class time. Both boys and girls have enjoyed this class. Past session projects have included: a tank, car shooter, small pool game, wooden box with hinged lid, picture frame and soft ball catapult.
